Jeff Springer

Jeff Springer was born in an abandoned town in the California desert, raised in Hawaii, and educated at USC Film School. After living for a winter in Russia, he returned to Los Angeles and began editing for NBC, Lucasfilm, Fox, UPN, Capitol, and Geffen Records. Burned out and hungover on WWF and bad R&B, he fled to San Francisco to start work on the John Waters narrated documentary PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA with co-director Chris Metzler. After weeks in the desert and a couple of cameras lost to salt and sun, the film went on to win 37 awards for Best Documentary and make its national broadcast premiere on the Sundance Channel.

Springer has gone on to edit several feature documentaries, including EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: THE STORY OF FISHBONE about the legendary rock-ska-funk band Fishbone. The film features interviews with Flea, Gwen Stefani, Tim Robbins, George Clinton, Les Claypool, and is narrated by Laurence Fishburne. He also frequently serves as cinematographer and director on a wide variety of documentary, commercial, corporate, and music video projects, including directing numerous short documentaries for HDNet's World Report. Recently he returned from Afghanistan, where he was editing an hour long documentary, IN-JUSTICE, about Afghan women in prison for "moral crimes."

BEHIND THE MASK: LUCHA LIBRE USA

A short doc for HDNet about two everyday guys who, on the weekends, turn into masked lucha libre wrestlers. From the sport's roots in Mexico, to the backyards of America, lucha libre wrestling is a Latin American tradition alive and evolving in the United States. (14 min.)

A short documentary on the Anti-Gravity Surf Ministry in Huntington Beach, CA. Commissioned by HDNet for the "Beyond Belief" segment of HDNet's World Report. (14 min.)

ART FROM THE ASHES: DETROIT'S HEIDELBERG PROJECT

After the decline of the auto industry, riots, rampant crime, and urban decay, the city of Detroit has been struggling to find a new identity. Looking to inspire change, artist Tyree Guyton began to use paint and found objects to transform 2 city blocks into a provocative and colorful art installation. The art project on Heidelberg Street has since become a mecca for artists and stands as a symbol of Detroit's ongoing artistic renaissance. Commissioned by HDNet for the VIEWFINDER segment of HDNet's "World Report". (15 min.)

"IN-JUSTICE" - An hour long documentary about 3 women in prison in Afghanistan who are accused of "moral crimes." The film was edited on location in Kabul, Afghanistan and was funded in part by the European Union. The film was recently completed and is intended for international broadcast.

GEFFEN RECORDS - Pieces for the bands Hole, Aerosmith, and The Bloodhound Gang (winner of an award from Avid), as well as various soundtrack spots.

I have also cut numerous other indie documentary projects, as well editing for Warner Brothers Television, United Paramount Network, Capitol and Arista Records.
